Freelancing Job: Freelancing is emerging as a preferred career route for urban youth in Odisha, which is changing perceptions about growing access to the Internet, the rise of gig platforms, and traditional employment. Fields such as material writing, web development, digital marketing, and graphic design are seeing a bounce in independent professionals, especially among recent graduates.
Young graduates shift from traditional jobs
Cities like Rourkela and Bhubaneswar are moving away from 9 to 5 roles, which are prepared for flexibility and autonomy that provide freelancing. Online platforms have allowed skilled individuals to work with global customers while living in small cities or even semi-urban areas.
Training and infrastructure support the gig economy
Skills in Odisha are favorable for this trend by providing short-term certificates in high-demand freelance skills. Institutes now offer career counseling sessions focused on the construction of online portfolios, payment systems, and customer acquisitions. The state government’s meditation on digital skilling and start-up incubators has also provided a supportive environment.
Challenges remain despite development
Despite the appeal, challenges remain-including inconsistent income, lack of legal framework for freelancers, and the requirement of self-discipline. However, many are ready to take risks for the sake of self-exploitation and diverse project opportunities.
Mixed views on the freelancing trend
A freelancer, Tarunesh Jharia, said, “Freelancing means working for yourself and offering your skills to different people or companies. You are not bound by a boss or job. You can choose what to do, when to do it, and where to do it, even from your home.
Rudra Avilash, a local businessman, said, “While the younger generation is showing more inclination towards freelancing, it is not good for their future. As long as it is a side hustle, it is good, but it should not be a career option. Although companies and businesses will benefit more than not hiring permanent employees, it is not good for future organizations that are planning to work for private organizations.”
